The Electrical Appliance Serviceperson qualification (formerly ESTA) allows the holder to work on 250 volt plug-in appliances. The course meets the requirements of the theory and practical assessment and ability to go out and work in the industry for the 18 months practical training requirement to gain the full qualifications. Further practical work is required by the registration board before actual registration is granted.

The types of work an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson is permitted to carry out are:

  • the maintenance of appliances that have an electrical rating of not more than 250 volts and are supplied by plug and flexible cord; and
  • the testing of work described above
  • the supervision of any work described above.

In New Zealand all people who engage in prescribed electrical work, must be registered or covered by the provisions under the Electricity Act 1992, or the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

UCOL provides courses to prepare students in obtaining these certificates. It is necessary for a student to pass a theory examination and to be assessed in a number of practical skills as set out by the Electrical Workers Registration Board. However, you must complete 18 months practical training requirements to gain this full qualification.

This page is for people enrolling on the Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (EAS) course and exam. Please refer to the EWRB Examinations page if only requiring examination or to find out more about dates and enrolment processes.

UCOL is also looking to add extra times, but these will be running depending on how many people enrol. If you are interested in these course dates please enrol to secure a place. Contact Micaela McIntosh  M.McIntosh@ucol.ac.nz or (06) 952 7001 extension 70745.
